Ivan Pepelnjak

Built his first proprietary WAN network in early 1980's. He has been designing, installing, troubleshooting, and operating large service provider and enterprise WAN and LAN networks since 1990 and is currently chief technology advisor at NIL Data Communications, focusing on advanced IP-based networks and web technologies. His books published by Cisco Press include MPLS and VPN Architectures and EIGRP Network Design. Today, Ivan consults, plays with new networking technologies, researches, teaches, and writes about thechanges in virtual and physical networking issues created by demand for cloud services and other changes in the IT landscape at IPspace.net

Abner Germanow

As Sr. Director of Enterprise Solutions at Juniper Networks, Abner Germanow is responsible for connecting Juniper technology innovations to the opportunities of businesses, governments, and educational institutions. Prior to joining Juniper Networks, Mr. Germanow led the Enterprise Communications Infrastructure research practice at IDC, a leading market research and IT advisory firm. At IDC, his team pioneered research into the market dynamics influencing investments in switching, routing, WLAN, IP video, telepresence, security, and unified communications. He has spoken at numerous private and industry events including Interop, RSA, IDC Directions, and he has been widely quoted in many business and trade publications. 2. How are you providing firewall policy enforcement, intrusion detection, anti-virus and compliance reporting for communications between VMs in the virtualized server environment?

We're not, using our traditional physical network security to secure the physical server, but we're not enforcing policy or providing reporting on traffic between VMs.
We force traffic from one VM to another out of the physical server and to pass through a physical firewall where policy can be applied.
We're using individual agents on each VM to enforce policy and provide security.
We have a purpose built virtual firewall running on the hypervisor to provide policy enforcement, security and reporting for the virtualized server environment.

3. Is your organization in considering a converged fabric for the data center?

We're not. Don't believe in a single fabric that will replace our Ethernet based networking and/or Storage Area Networking.
Interested, starting to investigate a migration to a converged fabric for our data center(s).
